Yu Garden or Yuyuan Garden is a must-see place in Shanghai. Situated right in center of the city next to the Old Town bazaar this garden was first created in 1559 by a high-ranking official of the Ming Dynasty for his father. The original garden took almost 20 years to build. Over the years the garden has undergone many changes and restorations. This classic Chinese garden was originally a private garden. The Shanghai government opened it to the public in 1961, and declared it a national monument in 1982.
