The next day we flew to Cusco. We left baggage claim and asked a taxi driver to take us to Ollantaytambo. It was about an hour and a half ride and it cost us $35. We spent all day exploring the ruins in Olly and then spent the night at KB Tambo. The room we were in was very basic but very clean. Their restaurant served good food as well.
We left early the next morning and took the train from Olly to Aguas Calientes. We had reservations for the train when we arrived in Olly but no assigned seats. We went to the train station the day before to have seats assigned, as the ticket windows are not open early in the morning.
We we arrived in A/C we checked into our hotel. We stayed at the Presidente Hotel, which is right along the train track and has the river on the other side. We had a room on the river side of the hotel and the constant noise of the river gave us one of the best nights of sleep we have ever had.
After dropping out things off at the hotel we went to purchase tickets for the bus up to Machu Picchu. The bus travels up the side of the mountain on a very small road with no guardrails. It's quite an experience.
Machu Picchu was incredible. It worth all of the effort and traveling we did to get there. While there, we explored the ruins, hiked out to see the old Inca Bridge, and got to see a baby llama born. It was a great day.
The following day we explored Aguas Calientes. You can see the small town in a few hours, but we used the day to relax and get ready for the rest of our journey.
We then took the train back to Cusco where we spent two days exploring sights in and around Cusco. I was still suffering from a little altitude sickness, so we took it slow and enjoyed our last 2 days in Peru.
This was a great trip and I would recommend it to anyone.
