On the eve of October 31, 1517, Martin Luther nailed his *Ninety-five Theses* to the church door in Wittenberg, Germany. With this act Luther publicly protested practices of the Church which he believed to be wrong. It is fitting that I post this travel article concerning my visit to Wittenberg today, October 29, Reformation Sunday on the 2000 church year calendar.

Reformation Day recognizes that event as the official beginning of the Protestant Reformation. However, at the time Luther/s intent was to debate these issues within the church, not to cause divisions. Fortunately, even though we humans have a stubbornness and bent toward arguing, the differences of opinion we have with each other are much more important to us than they are to God.

Wittenberg is in the former East Germany, southwest of Berlin. We were there in the middle of July, 2000. It is a beautiful country, and we found the people there very friendly. And even though the Wall has been down only about ten years, you can already find a McDonald/s at almost every exit on the Autobahn!
