It is anchored by two towers, built of limestone, granite and cement. The world&#146;s first steel wire suspension bridge, for twenty years it was also the world&#146;s longest, with a main span of nearly 1,600 feet (487 m). Planning began in 1870, but this bridge wasn&#146;t finally completed and opened until 1883. At the time it was the only land passage between Manhattan and Brooklyn, and on opening day alone the US President, hundreds of vehicles, and thousands of people crossed it. </div></nolayer></noembed>
