Note the Depot Market Square building on the right. The market, completed in 2006, is a regional example of recycling and environmentally conscious construction. For example, the beautiful beams and arches were salvaged from demolition of the Highway 99 bridge over the Skagit River between Mt. Vernon and Burlington. On the south side of the building, a rain garden collects and filters rain water. The facility also pays homage to its historical significance and Railroad Avenues namesake - the old classic Victorian-style railway depot which was demolished in 1945. The new structure includes a bronze locomotive bell dating back to the early 1900s. Photo here: http://www.bellingham.net/images/pagemaster/CBD2.jpg
