Chiricahua Rocks, March 2004
Chiricahua (cheer-i-ca'-wa) was a pleasant surprise. It is located about 2 hours southeast of Tucson in the middle of nowhere. The scenery was also completely different than the desert landscape we saw at Saguaro National Park. The monument is full of rock spires, massive stone columns, and seemingly delicate balanced rocks, formed by volcanic activity 27 million years ago. Then erosion over the eons form what we see today. And at a higher elevation, we saw different tree varieties: oaks, junipers, firs and pines.
