. . . of the present palace. The fact that some of my photos reveal some pretty rough conditions have to do with the fact that not only had the palais been under a lengthy seige, but during Napoleonic times, it had also served as as army baracks and prison. Clearly these uses were unlikely to have done much for the palace's careful upkeep. Restoration today continues, but the damage, no doubt, is hard to undo. Furthermore, I suppose, it is important that a historic building reveal, not only its glory, but its scars as well.
