Museums in San Diego picture - Midway was commissioned in 1945, the first of three 45,000 ton carriers which were the worlds largest at the time. It served all around the world for a record 47 years. It was modernized and enlarged twice, adding a steel angled deck, mirror landing system, steam catapults, and other improvements. In 1992 it was decommissioned, and two years later became the present naval museum.
