It entered naval operations in 1960, and was also adopted by the USAF and the Marine Corps: over 5,000 were built. It served with distinction in the Vietnam War, and remained in service until 1996. It has set altitude and speed records, and can carry over 18,000 lb (8,400 kilos) of weapons. It was long used by both the USN Blue Angels and the USAF Thunderbirds aerobatic teams.
