After backpacking in Kings Canyon, Clara and I strolled through the Grant Grove, part of Kings Canyon National Park but well away from the canyon and the High Sierra. The grove, home to the world's second largest tree, was protected as General Grant National Park in 1890. Only in 1940 was the grove combined with several other groves, Kings Canyon and the Sierra Crest to form Kings Canyon National Park. If you're looking for big trees, you'll find them here--as well as in Sequoia National Park's Giant Forest. However, if you'd prefer a sequoia grove without pavement and fences and people, then I'd recommend the Muir Grove.
