For many years, the camp site was thought to have been about 1.5 miles west of this location. In the 1980's, archeological exploration revealed this to be the site. One of the bits of evidence for that is the emanation of mercury vapors from what proved to be latrine sites. Apparently, many of the L&C Company were afflicted with various stomach ailments for which the treatment was pills containing mercury. Once the latrine sites were discovered, researchers used army field manuals of the time to define where other parts of the camp must have been. Then, through careful excavation, they found shards and other artifacts that confirmed this location.
