The Snaza'ist Discovery Centre tells the story of mining from ancient ochre extraction to the days of hard rock gold mining. Snaza'ist (sna-za-ee-st), which translates as "striped rock place," is the indigenous name for Nickle Plate Mountain. The center is also the base for tours to the Mascot Gold Mine. The tour office has an interpretive center with scale models of the town & mine, local native artifacts, and a photo gallery. Mascot Mine tour info & photos: http://www.mascotmine.com/ The official tour takes passengers right to the mine by bus. More adventurous people can take self-guided walks on the steep trail that goes up to the old mineshaft, & theres also mountain bike trails along historic mining roads.
