Peterborough, a city of about 120,000 and the site of Trent University, is located about 200 miles west of Ottawa, Ontario, on Highway 7. The light blue lines on the sketch show the Trent-Severn Waterway. There are 45 locks altogether on the Waterway, all but two being of the well-known flooding variety. The other two are lift locks, the world’s highest at Peterborough, and a lower one farther up at Kirkland.
