It works like a water-operated (hydraulic)teeter-totter: enormous pumps controlled by an engineer move water over pistons from one lock to the other to raise one while the other one lowers simultaneously. We will enter the one on the right, and be raised 65 feet (20m) while the one on the left descends the same distance. When these locks were built more than a century ago, they were the largest concrete structure on earth.
