This goose is related to but genetically distinct from the Canada Goose and is marked differently. It is also Hawaii's state bird. Thet were in trouble for many years but with strict state and federal protection, they have been making a dramatic recovery in the past few years. I had never seen one when I lived here in the late 1960's or in my past trips but I saw quite a few on both Oahu and Kauai on this trip.
