The spiral black and white stripes clearly identify this Lighthouse as the one marking Cape Hatteras on the Outer Banks of North Carolina. When we first saw this Lighthouse in 1986 it was unsafe, unstable & closed to the public. Since that time, it has been moved a half mile back from the eroding beach & the pounding waves of the Atlantic Ocean that threatened to send it tumbling into the sea. It has recently been reopened to the public as a National Monument. Today, May 8, 2001, we are here & ready to climb to the top!
