After having had a good six weeks off dangerous activities after the death climb it was time for an adrenalin rush. We decided to mountain bike down the worlds most dangerous road (by US stats this is), apparently 222 fatalities last year, but only about three from bikes and everyone does it so I am not crazy. Decided to use the top company Gravity Assisted Mountain bikes as not taking any risks of a wheel coming off or the breaks not working as I speed down this hill. The ride started at La Cumbre (4,700m). The weather was good until I hoped on the bike and then the rains came, just the thing you don't want when you are about to embark on the worlds most dangerous road. The first decsent was on ashfelt until 2,000 meters. I was scoping the other riders here as didn't want to win this bike ride but also didn't want to finish in the slow group with the girls (just kidding girls). So I managed to get in the quick group but towards the back of this. At the end of the ashfelt the true worlds most dangerous road starts. Its now a dirt path with 1,000m sheer drops to the left. We also had to ride on the left so I made a point of not looking over the edge, my riding pace had also slowed from the tour de France like pace on the ashfelt. The ride was amazing. Incredible scenery all around snow covered plains, mountain ranges and steaming amazon jungle. We got very wet, muddy as you were constantly riding through rain, dust and low cloud. It was 64km and 90% downhill with no real need to peddle. An amazing day.
