I spent just over a week in Tasmania in July 2002.
The pictures on this page were taken on a day trip from Hobart to Port Arthur, located on the Tasman peninsular. Port Arthur began operating in 1830 as a timber station. Just three years later it became a prison settlement for male convicts and quickly became their hell on earth.
The historic site stands in 40 hectares of magnificent gardens and has numerous restored buildings from the convict era. Guided tours set off at regular intervals at at a very reasonable rate.
