We are a unique eco system in that we are the only true desert in Canada. This gives us the warmest temperatures in Canada. We are sometimes called the "Arizona of the North".
Springtime brings the blossoms of the fruit trees and we become a sea of blooms and soft fragrances mingle on a breeze. Apples, cherries, peaches, plums, apricots, nectarines and pear trees will bloom in succession in April...
The wild flowers abound at this time and we are home to some of the rarest wild flowers in Canada. The mountainsides are covered with Balsomroot, Shooting Stars to name but a few.
Marmot(yellow bellied) are wonderfully lazy little creatures that harm no one and love to bask in the sun.. as do the local chipmonks..it is also the time of the return of many of our birds. This particular area is what is referred to as a IBA(Important Bird Area); home to over 160 species. Hummingbirds return every year early in April to start the whole mating/nesting process. The Calliope(North America's smallest hummingbird)returned first this year with the big and quite beautiful male Rufus making his appearance second. Many birds brighten up the landscape now and it is a sight for the eyes to see the beautiful winged wonders return.
It is my sincere hope that you enjoy some of what you see, knowing it is my extreme pleasure to share this with you.
