(tour station 9) the most impressive structure here & the most famous landmark in Penang. Built between 1915 & 1930, the seven-storey pagoda is 100 feet high. Its innovative design is a combination of Chinese, Thai & Burmese architecture & craftsmanship - the octagonal base is typically Chinese, the middle tiers are Thai and the spiral dome, Burmese. One can climb as far up as the sixth level (200 steps, I didn't try...). There is an altar on every level where offerings to the Buddah can be made, & also many gold statues and carvings. There actually are a million images of Buddha in the pagoda.
