Veria, Greece, September 2002

I was in Veria in Northern Greece for the wedding of a cousin. It is quite a nice city. It is not a normal tourist destination so it was nice to see a real Greek city. On my planned return trip I know I will be spending more time there. Some of the highlights were several tombs that have been uncovered in recent years, of which there are no photos here because they were not allowed. It was quite an inspiring site to see frescoes painted over two thousand years ago right up close. We were even allowed to walk down right next to an excavation and look into the tomb. I have some pictures that are in books and pamphlets I brought home with me that I may scan to share here.

hi all, just been back from summer vacation in northern greece. Wow, very beautiful scenary. Didn't have enough time go and see all places you recommended, Thomas. But, thanks for the info concerning where to eat. Love the local restaurants and tavernas.

thanks, Drew, for the hotel info. The hotel is now under renovation, but still has a few rooms for the guests. Too bad, i lost my camera in Venezilos airport. Will return to Greece this December. Probably will spend New Year eve over there.

Ya Sas! My wife is from Veria. We got married there 3 years ago. Veria is not your typical tourist destination - no bad thing in my opinion. There are plenty of places to visit in & around the town:

* Numerous Byzantine churches. * Steps (Beama) of St Paul near Mavromikhali where the Apostle preached. * Monastery of the Panagia Soumela, southwest of Veria. * Tomb of Philip II in Vergina (I've visited 3 times & would love to go again!). * The 3 ski resorts on the Vermion Mountains. * Byzantine Museum of Veria (a converted mill). * Archaeological Museum of Veria.

Local food is delicious:

* Revani from the shop close to the church of Agios Antonios * Bougatsa from the shop opposite the court house. * The open market on Tuesdays for fresh fruit and veg. * The tavernas near Barbouta for best of Greek cuisine. * Elia in the evening - barbecued corn on the cob & roasted chestnuts from the many street vendors' stalls.

Definitely go see the royal tombs at Vergina. Otherwise just spend time in town at the tavernas enjoying real Greek life, this is not a tourist town. -drew-

hi, just seen the pics of Veria and Thessaloniki you posted. I will be traveling to northern greece this summer, and will be staying in Thessaloniki and Veria, and probably Delphi. I tried to search Makedonia Hotel in Veria as you suggested, but couldn't find their site. I found Makedonia Palace hotel-site but it's located in Thessaloniki instead. Are they the same hotel-group?? if yes, must be a quite expensive! Any suggestion of places to visit or things to see in Veria and Thess? thanks!!

We stayed at the Hotel Makedonia in Veria. It looks like their website is not up any more but you can do some more web searches to find their phone number. It was a nice place that was right in town.

Thanks! We did go to the cave/tomb at Vergina. The palace of Phillip in the photos was just a mile or 2 down the road from there. I don't have any pictures because they were not allowed in the tombs.

Thanks, Drew, for your interesting photos! In many trips to Greece (plus living there, in Athens for 2 years) I had never seen this place, will look it up on map. I've been in the "new" (?) cave W. of Salonika, which is a fascinating museum of wonderful artifacts, found in the tomb of Philip, I wonder if you went in there? It's spectacular!! It's at Vergina...
