This srine was built in 1920 in honor of Emperor Meiji and his wife, who were credited with opening Japan to the West. The shrine was destroyed by bombing at the end of WWII, and completely rebuilt in 1958. Though the shrine is a reconstruction, it is an authentic one built with cypress.
