As the Imperial Palace is only open to the public two days of the year (January 2 and December 23), the right side of the bridge is the closest one can get to the Palace itself. This is the best view of the Imperial Palace that photographers have on days that it is closed. The bride is named "Niju-bashi," and the palace is in the back. The water is a moat that goes around the main palace grounds. One-quarter of the grounds, the East Garden, is open to the public year-round.
