Brihadeesvara Temple - Tamil Nadhu

Tanjavur the rice bowl of Tamil Nadhu lies 55 km east of Trichy,nearest airport.Tanjavur rose to glory, during the Chola reign, between the 10 th and the 14 th centuaries,and became a centre of learning and culture.

Man on the street call it *periya kovil*,perhaps because Encyclopedia Britanica describes it simply as * the grandest temple in India*

It has stone sculptures, highly decorated Gopuram and fantastic collection of frescos.

It was built by the Chola King Raja Raja Cholan.

I have visited almost all the temples in Trichy, Tanjavur, Madurai, kanyakumari, Kumbakonam and Koyamputhur. I just could not describe the inner "aathma thirupthi" when I was at these temples. I feel Like I'm home, when I was at Thiruvannaikkaa, I felt as if I was there earlier, sometime ago. Everytime I visit these places, I used take a deep breath, so as to have the smell of the karpooram, sandalwood and the theertham.

I am very proud to say that I am a Tamil. I visited india and have seen many temples, such as Chidambaram, Vaitheeswaran, Tanjai Periya Kovil, Madurai Meenatchiamman, Thiruchendur, and many more I would like to visit. I admired the structure of the temples & still wondering how those huge temples were built. Yet the media is only focusing on the North India and other parts of world. Why not Tamil Nadu Government do something to promote these breath taking beauties to the rest of the world.
