- Porchester Castle is a big, ancient castle by the sea, constructed back in the 3rd century by the Romans. It was a time when Rome ruled England for almost 500 years! (From the 1st to the 5th centuries.) *As stated back in Part 1, in the late 3rd century, the Romans built a series of defensive forts along the coast of England to protect their colony from the increasingly active Saxons. The forts are collectively known as the Saxon Shore forts. This castle then, covering some 9 acres in total, provides such a wealth of fascination not only because its history spans some 2000 years (starting with the arrival of the Romans in England back in the 1st century) but also, there is so much evidence of all periods of occupation -from Roman fort, to medieval stronghold, to the Royal Palace, & the notorious prison in the 17-18th, as stated back in part 1.
