During the 7th to 9th centuries, timber houses & the remnants of domestic occupation (rubbish pits, wells etc.) were still protected by the walls & towers although at the end of the 9nth century, there appears to have been a break in occupation. By 904 A.D., Portchester belonged to King Edward "the Elder" & it became one of the burghs - a protected stronghold manned by the local population along very organised lines. (The burghs protected against Viking raids.) *Edward gave the castle first to his mother, and then to his wife.
