If you may recall my last article titled "Portchester Castle," that ancient castle dates back to the Roman occupation of England, from the 1st-5th centuries (500 long years!) The Romans left England in the 5th to defend Rome from the barbarian siege, never to return to England since the mighty Roman empire was soundly defeated. (The empire finally crumble after 1,000+ long years of world domination!) *Rome recalled its garrison from the far reaches of its vast empire: from England, North Africa, the Middle-East, Eastern Europe, & etc. but to no avail as the barbarians were just an irresistible force! Rome's downfall then ushered Western civilization to the Dark Ages starting the 5th.
