Landing in England in 1066, William of Normandy erected 2 castles [forts] on the south coast to house his troops. One of those castles [forts] is Hastings castle. As for England's local king, he wasn't able to check William's landing because he & his armies were busy up north, repelling the Viking invasion from Scandinavia. Inshort, William's landing & occupation of southern England's was a cinch! *Originally, Hastings castle was a simple wooden fort built on an earthen motte, and it is believed that these basic structures were transported by William from Normandy, in pre-fabricated form, as part of his supplies. Hastings Castle then was Britains' first Norman castle.
