Well, before we get scared, we have to remember that this scare has been happening since the seer's time thousands of years ago. Back then, the occupied people thought that it was about to happen since they were experiencing the signs. But then, empires rise & fall as that's the oscillating nature of history. After experiencing several super-powers throughout its long history, the seers people [the Jews] are no longer occupied. But since the seers word spread-out all over the world (since the Bible became the world's foremost book of truth), then this idea of "end of days" has also spread that it has ultimately become a very powerful concept for the other peoples of the world. (I'm not talking about the muslims of the Mid-East who are now the occupied people 'coz they adhere to the Koran & thus, have a different truth.)
