Hiram M. Chittenden Locks The Hiram M. Chittenden Locks, known locally simply as the Ballard Locks, lift and lower working boats, pleasure craft, research vessels, and even kayaks between the salt water of Puget Sound and the fresh water of Lake Union. The locks are among the busiest in the country. Stand clear of the bridges when the lock gates open, and watch the boats rise or fall almost within your arm’s reach. You may never get closer unless you take a turn as a deck hand. Alongside the Locks, watch salmon and trout journey up the fish ladder to complete their salt water to fresh water migration. Seven acres of the Carl S. English Jr. Ornamental Gardens grace the area, showcasing more than 1,000 species of native and exotic trees, shrubs and plants. During the week you can often see groups of school children visiting on field trips. On the weekends families and friends gather to picnic in the gardens while the boats go by.
