Kinkakuji Temple, Kyoto Sightseeing in Japan picture - Kinkakuji Temple (Temple of the Golden Pavilion). Originally constructed in the 14th Century by the warlord and Zen patron Ashikaga Yoshimitsu, the temple was burned to ground in 1950 by an over zealous monk (or crazed acolyte, whatever you prefer)! This modern restoration, re-created from the original plans, arose from the ashes, much like the golden Pheonix perched on it's roof! And yes, the brilliant golden sheen is from real gold leaf applied to the upper floors!
