Golden Week consists of a series of national holidays in a row in the spring of each year. If you time it right (like I did) you can get a full week of vacation. My parents came out to visit me during this time. They got a Japan Rail Pass so we were able to use the bullet train quite easily to get to far off destinations like Kyoto, Nara, and Hiroshima.
