The Temple itself is in very good shape.
The Story Behind the Temple:
Way back before Athens was actually named Athens there were 2 gods who offered to be the guardians of the city. Posiden and Athena. Posiden was a very wise man, he offered the soon to be Athenians and endless supply of water if he was chosen as the guardian. But Athena, also being very wise herself, offered the Athenians olive trees which could survive with little or not water. Now this amazed the Athenians, how could a tree survive without water they always asked? So the people of the city-state chose Athena as there guardian and in her honor named the city, Ahtens. Now the Athenians still wanted to stay on good terms with Posiden, so they built him this beautiful temple overlooking sea and Piraeus.
It was said that when the solid gold and ivory statue still existed on top of the Parthenon in the Acropolis of Athens, you could see the golden glow of the statue all the way to this temple. It is said that Posiden resides here to watch over the waters for potential invaders.
Personally i found the views of the sunsets most impressive.
If the history of the temple does not interest you, then the sunset will make the trip worth you while.
