The sun temple of Konark

The crowning glory of Oriya temple architecture, the sun temple also known as *the Black Pagoda*. As per legend, Samba son of Lord Krishna was afflicted by leprosy, brought about by his fathers curse on him. After 12 years of penance, he was cured by Suriya, the sun god, inwhose honour he built this temple. Built by Raja Narasimhadeva of the Ganga dynasty, in the 13 th century AD. It resembles a colossal chariot, with 24 wheels ( to represent 24 hours), pulled by seven ( seven days a week ) straining horses, and has three-tiered pyramidal roof topped by a fine spire. The temple is a brilliant chronicle in stone, with impressive sculptures. Every aspect of life, humam life, civic life, war etc are presented with great precision. Even gays are well represented.

Any one interested in stone age architecture should not miss this wonderful temple.
