The Thurston lava tube runs several hundred feet under the ground, the first half being lighted for visitors. Lava flows not only on the surface, but below the surface in tubes that form around flowing lava. Look carefully when driving thru cuts in the lava and you can see these tubes, normally much smaller than this one.
