Hiking out over the old lava to the new flows can be up to a mile of slow progress. Note the terrain which consists of square miles of old lava flows. If you go, be aware that visitors line their cars up along the two-lane approach road for a couple of miles just to get to the start of the walk over the old lava field. That makes for a much longer walk. Wear good shoes.
