Kilauea-Iki crater
Hawaii Big Island picture - We hiked down thru a rain forest into the Kilauea-Iki crater, across the crater, and back up again. Took about 3 hours to go the 4 miles. The floor of the crater is relatively smooth, discounting the fractures and shifting of the plates of the floor. It's also about 2 miles across. In 1959, there was a huge eruption in this crater that spouted a fountain of lave 1900 foot high! It filled the crater to a depth of about 400 foot. Note the ohi'a tree: who would think it could grow in almost solid rock?
