HISTORY OF ILMAJOKI The parish of Ilmajoki, which evolved into the municipality, was founded in 1516.

Ilmajoki is known in Finnish history as teh home of Jaakko Ilkka, leader of a peasant rebellion in the 16th century. The uprising was against governor Fleming, who was felt to be unfair towards the peasants. The field of Ilkka is nowadays the scene on the annual Ilmajoki Music Festival.
