A main attraction of Split is the remains of the summer palace of the Roman Emperor Diocletian, which was built in the 3rd century. In the 7th century, the people of Split moved into the fortress to protect themselves from invading Slavs, and then later built their city within its walls. All that remains today of the palace are the cellars and some walls, and you can still see residences - with residents.
