The Fort of Mandalay in the Northern half of the country dominates the city with its command post Mandalay Hill in the background and numerous temples around the moat. The fort was the last stronghold to be taken out by the British in 1885. Ever since the country regained independance it has had a hard time keeping all the 111 different ethnic groups that live within its borders from proclaiming independance from the Bamar held land.
