A short RCMP history lesson:

The North West Mounted Police (NWMP) force was set up by an Act of Parliament in 1873 when Sir John A. MacDonald, the Prime Minister of Canada at the time, wanted a mounted police force to maintain law and order in the west and to encourage settlement. The police force marched west & established forts & posts in many locations. The post in Regina was established in 1882 and it became the headquarters of the NWMP.
