Palo Duro (Spanish for *hard wood*) Canyon is the second largest canyon in the U.S. It stretches over 120 miles and reaches depths up to 1,200 feet. I reccomend camping at the State Park located in Canyon, Tx. Some animals you might see are wild turkey, deer, rabbits, and roadrunners. There are a few local restuarants and a Wal-Mart within a few miles of the camp sites. There is also a large museum in the area. While at the State Park (or in the area) You should see the musical *Texas* it shows June-August everynite except Wednesdays. It is a great play and they even offer a tastey bar-b-cue dinner before the show. (For more info. or online tickets check out www.texasmusicaldrama.com) There are also area hotels if you prefer not to camp.

During our stay at Palo Duro Canyon State Park, we went horseback riding on one of the many trails in the park, had breakfast in the canyons at the Elkin/s Ranch (right across the street) and enjoyed a very scenic and intersting jeep ride into the canyon, also at the Elkin/s Ranch. We also hiked the Lighthouse trail and spent quality family time in our camper playing dominoes ( I won of course).

If you go in the summer, like we did, be sure to have plenty of water, fans, games, etc. It gets very hot during the day, especially if your trailer/tent has canvas.

Dogs and horses are welcome in the State Park, and you made need their medical papers to get them in. For park reservations check out www.tpwd.state.tx.us for more information.
