In Beijing, our tour group had a chance to chat at length with a woman in her 90s who told us -- with some difficulty -- about a practice known as "foot binding." She was one of the last to suffer a lifetime of pain from this brutal custom, which intentionally produced deformed feet to make young women more "attractive" to men.
