Actually, to go to Sa Pa, you get off the overnight train from Ha Noi at Lao Cai Station, then take National Route 4D, Sa Pa is 23 miles to the West. To reach Bac Ha, you take opposite direction to the East. Use National Route 70 through Ban Phiet, Ban Cam, heading Southeast. At Phong Nien, turn left on Provincial Route 153 North, crossing the Bao Nhai Pass, zigzagging through Bao Nhai Village, Nam Mon, Na Hoi: Bac Ha is only about 50 miles from Lao Cai but you may expect to arrive after 100 minutes.
