Vietnam: Danang City & Han River

Danang has a close relationship to the American's Vietnam War.

During the war, it has been the Headquarters of XXIV Corps, with Danang Air Forces Base and Danang Naval Base. Much of the war activities against the North have been handled either here from its Panama Intelligence Center over Tien Sha Mountain, or in Honolulu, Hawaii rather than Saigon. Danang was also the bridge-head where the first US Marines "break-grounded" landing their feet on Vietnam in 1964.

i was the mailman at tien sha for 6 months in 1966. i dont remember very many names, too many,got the mail at the white elephant. my neighbor(red hurst) was a pilot on the han river. lucked out and stumbled on this page. good to see some of us are still alive. peace my brothers.

Jim, I was stationed on APL-5 from MArch 1966 until Oct 1967 in Da Nang harbor. Or by the way APL-5 is still serving the navy at naval station san diego as of 1 April 2012

James W. Leitch, Harbor Master DaNang
I'm just looking for someone who perhaps served with my father, James W. Leitch, Chief Boatswains Mate. He served in Vietnam 1968-69, presumably part of his tour as a Harbor Pilot in DaNang. Just wanted to know about his tour. He never spoke much of the war, retired from the Navy shortly there after and was tragically killed on an ocean going tugboat in Florida. My mother said he also operated a river boat well, just need to know for sure. any information would greatly appreciated.

I served on the uss pickaway in 65-69 and I amd trying to convince the VA that we docked in DaNang during that period. Trying to qualify on agent orange and I need dates and photos if anyone has them. I am desperate. I am in the VA nursing home in Lake City, FL. Thanks

NSA River/Anchorage Patol boats
I served a year with harbor patrol in Danang from May 1965 to June 1966. I worked on the Mark 5 and six months on the two star admirals barge. I wish everyone that was in Danang during those years kind regards.

USN at NSA Danang- 1966 -67 Harbor Patro
I served a year with harbor patrol in Danang from May 1966 to June 1967. I worked on the Mark 5 and Mark 4 boats as well as the boston whalers. I was there when we moved from the river location to the harbor and helped throw rocks from the hill into the water to make a bit of a jetty for the floating Harbor Patrol buildings. Aslo served with Dominic Martoccia, Shorty Alvereze Yanzey Derringer and others, I still have a crossed ancor wood plaque I made at the boat house on the hill. And some of us took turns watching over the paint house near the road. I remember the laudry girls and the wet clothes during monsoon.

I have a lot of photo of the harbor in 65-66. i spent time on all the boats. I still remenber King, Wilson, Jorden, Steve Avery. The photos you post do not look like DaNang back then.
