At the beginning of World War II in Warsaw lived 1 million people. On the August 1, 1944 began an insurrection against Germanys troops occupying the country. After 63 days of ferocious fights without allied help, the uprising failed. 18 000 insurgents were killed, 200 000 civilians were dead and all survivors were deported to death-camps or to labor camps as slaves.

The Germans turned the city to ruble. At the end of 1944, Warsaw did not have a single habitant! The degree of destruction and the number of victims were even worse than in Hiroshima! I was an eyewitness to these events.

Today Warsaw is a modern, vibrant city. All historical buildings like the Old Town and all the churches were reconstructed according to old photographs.
