Regarding your own tasks during the war, I believe there must be a lot of stories hidden or untold. By the time I was in as a combat-photographer for the Associated Press, you were out according to the Nixon's Vietnamization Plan. I wish I could be in touch with you to hear about your experience. MACV-SOG and "The Trail"...
I was a US Special Forces "Dai-uy" (Captain) in the top secret US unit called MACV-SOG from 1970 to 1972. We inserted small reconnaissance (recon)teams by helicopter across the Vietnamese border into Laos and Cambodia to disrupt NVA operations on "the trail". Each team usually was composed of 2 to 3 US and 8 to 9 Vietnamese, Nungs (Chinese-Vietnamese) or Montagnards (hill people), and we operated so far "west" that we were out of radio and friendly artillery range. At any given time between 1965 and 1971, roughly 40 to 50 US Green Berets and their indigenous teammates tied down 25,000 plus North Vietnamese Army (NVA) troops, who had to guard the trail against us. Read John Plaster's book "SOG" for the incredible story. The NVA were a formidable and dedicated enemy, and the story of the battle of "The Trail" is an epic one for both sides...
