When Henry died in 1758, his son Frederick became "the 5th Earl of Carlisle." Fred was only 10 years young when this happened! Anyway, while making his Grand Tour of Europe at the age of 19 accompanied by his good friend Mr. Fox, Frederick was elected Knight of the Thistle. On his return to London, the town of Carlisle was renowned for his extravagant lifestyle & his rash generosity in standing surety for his good friend's gambling debts severely crippled the estate's finances. (What a good friend Mr. Fox really was! He surely lived to his name:)
