As stated back in Part 1, Charles Howard was a skillful "political chameloen," changing political colors that best suit him. He was one of the few politicians who served under both the King, & the king's enemy named Cromwell who successfully overthrew the monarchy during the English Civil War. *Switching sides enabled Charles to maintain high position in the goverment which then afforded him to build this fabulous castles when his contemporaries were loosing their positions & properties pending on who was in power.
