- Castle Howard is considered the finest "country estate" of England. George "the 6th Earl of Carlisle" was an MP for 25 years! He became Chief Commissioner for Woods & Forests, was twice Lord Privy Seal, and was a Knight of the Garter. He died in 1848 & was succeeded by his 46 year old son named George William. *Unlike his grandfather Frederick who became Earl when he was only 10 years old, George William had to wait 46 long years!:)
